Activision has now put all of Bizzare Creations on 3 months notice. The studio that brought you Project Gotham Racing, Geometry Wars, and uh The Club is being shutdown. Today has been a bit of a layoff bonanza with Activision also shutting down Budcat who worked on some of the more recent Guitar Hero games and Lucas Arts being hit by more layoffs in addition to the earlier ones that came after the release of Force Unleashed 2.
This is a very sad day. I think I say for everyone that it always sucks when people lose their jobs. It certainly doesn’t make Activision look very good.
Youtube videos have been feeding Call of Duty fans with leaked footage of Black Ops for several weeks now with footage from single player campaign to its Zombies mode but now the games last big secret seems to have been revealed a weeks before the release.
The Black Ops ‘Dead Ops Arcade’ mode was mentioned in a legit Acheivements/Trophies list back at the end of September but now Youtubers are claiming that this is an unlockable arcade mode which is actually a spin off of the title’s popular Zombies mode.
Just like the Zombies mode, Dead Ops is a round-based game that enables you to clear waves of the undead, except this time it’s from a top down perspective, using the left analogue stick to move and the right one to fire. This mode supports co-op play also.
I’m assuming that all the videos showing this on Youtube have been removed by Activision already but they were there showing footage supporting all of this information. One video showed a ‘Speed Boost’ allowing you to blast through 20 or so enemies at a time and this ‘Speed Boost’ was also talked about in the Acheivements revealed in September.
We don’t talk much about sales over here (if you want us to talk sales more, you should let us know!). But I did feel it would be appopriate to bring up the sales of the latest Guitar Hero title, Warriors of Rock.
Guitar Hero, for the last few years, has been a cash cow for Activision. But the sales of the series, despite still being somewhat healthy, has been on a steady decline. While we are not at rock bottom yet, signs are showing that the name might not have anymore push behind it.
In its first week, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock only moved 86,000 units across all platforms in North America. Compare this to the last Guitar Hero, which moved more units in one week on the Wii alone. Definitely not a good sign for Activision.
I know most will probably say “hah, serves them right!” to Activision, and true it does. But I feel kind of bad for NeverSoft, the developer behind the most recent entries. Warriors of Rock seems like a title where they were given a bit more freedom, but things aren’t looking bright.
That being said, it is only the first week and the holiday season is coming up. I’m sure Activision will start making their money off this title at some point, but the downhill sales of the series is continuing. Activision has to do something, or else one of their biggest cash cows is going down the drain.
Tony Hawk: Shred is going to be the second game to use the under-performing Ride controller that shipped with the last Tony Hawk installment. This game is supposed to be brighter and targeted at a younger audience than Ride was.
The Tony Hawk franchise were the first to really bring skateboarding games into the fore-front. It has recently been overshadowed by the EA’s Skate games. Activision rebooted the game with the Ride Skateboard peripheral controller. There were complaints that the controller did not afford enough freedom of movement in Tony Hawk: Ride. There is no real information as the how Shred is going to address these issue but there is a site where you can see some of the tricks they have added and the game is going be released on October 26th in NA and on the 28th in Europe.
When it comes to 007, everyone’s eyes are currently on the Wii re-imagining of the Goldeneye. But if you don’t have a Wii, you can still get in on some James Bond action this year.
Blood Stone 007 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC puts Bond back behind the wheel. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be getting his hands dirty. The latest trailer, which you will find after the jump, shows some hand-to-hand combat along with some of the weaponry Bond will make use of during the title.
This is probably one of the few cases that a Wii game, at least within the same general franchise, is getting more attention than the 360 or PS3 release. But Goldeneye left such a huge mark in gaming history, I guess it’s only natural. Blood Stone is set for a November release, right along side GoldenEye.
There was a pretty big uproar in the PC community when Modern Warfare 2 moved away from dedicated servers and modding. But that won’t be the case with Treyarch’s upcoming entry in the series, Black Ops. Or rather, eventually it won’t be the case.
As of right now, Treyarch is completely focused on creating the game, so modding will have to come later. One of the developers on their offical forum said,”We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch.” How long after the launch is currently unknown.
The developer also said, “And, dev console: confirmed.” I have absoutely no idea what that means, but I’m sure some of you do.
Activision has put together the usual Prestige and Hardend Editions for fans who are willing to go the extra mile with their wallet for some Call of Duty: Black Ops swag.
Those who pick up the Prestige package this time around are going to get a remote control car that is built after the title’s RC-XD video surveillance vehicle. It has a range of 200 feet and can record audio and full-color video. Activision has put together a trailer showing off the device in game, which looks pretty cool. You can check it out after the jump. I’m assuming the real versions won’t explode, at least as a pre-built in function.
Those who pick up the Peristege package will also get the Hardend Edition’s content as well. Hardened includes a limited edition Black Ops medal, a Black Ops avatar outfit for either Xbox Live or PlayStation home (depending on the version), and four playable cooperative maps. Both sets are launching November 9th and, while not officially priced, GameStop lists the Prestige at $149.99 and the Hardened at $79.99.
Activision has yet to announce exactly what the cooperative maps will be, but Best Buy has listed them as four maps Zombie maps. Which would make sense, as Treyarch developed World at War, which introduced the Zombie mode to Call of Duty.
You can check out the Prestige edition after the jump, along with that trailer mentioned earlier.

Looking forward to the next Goldeneye, but find the Wii’s pointer controls silly? Activision has the bundle for you. Activision confirmed to IGN that the title will launch with a golden Classic Controller Pro.The controller will be a limited time only hardware bundle with the game, and will bump the price tag up to $69.99. You can check out the Gold Classic Controller Pro after the jump.
Activision also released a new trailer. While there is a good chunk of old footage, you will also find bits of new footage scattered throughout. The trailer is also after the jump.
World of Warcraft is the most successful massively multiplayer RPG ever, pretty much blowing every other MMO out of the water in terms of subscribers. But for their next MMO, Blizzard is leaving behind all of their franchise names for a new IP according to Activision’s Bobby Kotick.
Despite having no previous franchise ties, the title will receive an “enormous investment,” said Kotick. Kotick didn’t give any insight on how far along these projects are. So when we see them, at this point, is anyone’s guess.
The Spider-Man universe cross over title, Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions, is launching September 7th for pretty much every platform known to man. We have known about the inclusion of Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man Noir since its announcements, and not too long ago we heard that Spider-Man 2099 would be included. Now we have the fourth and final Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man.
Ultimate Spider-Man uses his black suit at all times and attacks with tentacle like attacks. You can see him in action in the Comic-Con trailer after the jump.
Shattered Dimensions takes these four Spider-Man universes and links them together. You will be able to play as all four Spider-Man characters across all four universes, so it will be interesting to see how they mesh together.
It has been awhile since we have seen a solid Spider-Man game. And with last year’s Batman: Arkham Asylum redefining comic book based video games, Activision will have to do a lot to try to top the market.
