With the NGP basically being a PS3 in your pocket, we have to ask how much juice is this thing going to take to run. The answer? Well, maybe not as much as we might think. Sony says the target battery life is that of the PSP 3000s, which lasts anywhere between four to six hours, which would trump even the 3DS’s battery life of three to five with 3D active.
Kotaku reports that an inside developer says that the development kits prove to have a strong battery life, better than that of the PSP 3000. But keep in mind, dev kits are not retail systems.

Sick and tired of 3DS this and 3DS that? We’ll now it will be NGP this and NGP that. Sony has announced their next hand held, Next Generation Portable.
If you’ve been following the rumors behind what was the PSP2, then you already know a lot a bout the NGP. The platform is going to offer PS3 level visuals beautifully displayed on a five inch OLED screen. Developers showed off many tech demos of PS3 games, along with some full on ports for PlayStation 3 games, including Yakuza 4, Lost Planet, Uncharted and even Metal Gear Solid 4.
Hit the jump to find out more.
Is it Janaury 27th yet? Oh, the PSP2 isn’t officially announced yet then. Well, rumor time! A Japanese magazine has released a handful details regarding the features of the handheld.
The first up is the tech behind the screen. Apparently the screen is an OLED screen that supports touch controls. Probably more exciting to hear is that the device is 3G capable. So now you don’t need a Wi-fi hot spot to connect to the network, removing that tether devices like the 3DS still have to worry about. The PSP2 also has a new processor designed specifically for the PSP2.
But, again, rumor. Who knows, maybe the PSP2 and PSPhone don’t exist!
Yeah, I’ll see you on the 27th.

Sure, 3DS games look pretty good, but they aren’t exaclt mind numbing for a portable. The PSP has already come pretty close to what the 3DS is performing. With rumors of Sony’s new handheld on the way, the 3DS may have to fight the same fight that the original DS did with its visuals.
Rumor has it that Sony is shopping the PSP2 around to developers claiming that the platform is “as powerful as the PlayStation 3.” The originator of the rumor, MCV, also details that the platform will have a heavy downloadable presence, but will still play physical media, and that it is scheduled for a Q4 2010 release.
Of course, this brings up the question of price. The PS3 is still a nice chunk of change, costing $299.99. Shove all of that into the palm of your hands, and I’d imagine you will have an even more expensive platform. Unless Sony has something else up their sleeves with the PSP2′s release, like maybe a touch pad on the back of the system, the PSP2 and 3DS are set to fight the exact same fight the DS and PSP fought. And we all know how that turned out.
With all the 3DS hype flying around, anyone looking forward to the PSP2?

PSP2 has essentially been confirmed to exist throught the curse of anything Sony releases will have information leaks aplenty, however it looks like we might actually get some solid information by the end of the month. They are having an event in Japan open to select press that is being called a business and strategy meeting. The presence of press almost certainly means they have something to show so we can only hope it’s the PSP2.

As much as I’d like to say PSP2 is just a rumor still, it is pretty hard to deny it as being false at this point. To further support the ‘rumor’, Sony has patented new touch pads. The technology detailed here seems similar to the rumored touch pad that are on the back of the PSP2. There have even been rumored leaked images that have the pads on the back as well.
EA has pretty much confirmed the existence of the PSP2. And while we should still be weary, I think at this point it is just a matter of time till we see it. Hopefully Sony plans on actually announcing the device, and the PlayStation Phone, sometime soon.

The wait for the first glimpse of the PSP2 may finally be over. VG247 posted a picture of a PSP2 development kit earlier today.
The pics show the PSP2′s forward- and rear-facing cameras, as well as the trackpad on the rear of the unit.
Note that the PSP2 is still in development so it’s likely that this isn’t the console’s final form factor. Some developers are working with a kit with similar construction to a PSP go at the moment with a sliding screen over physical controls, as well as an HD screen.
EA has confirmed it’s had “exposure” to the unit, and developer Netherrealm has openly admitted it’s working with a kit. The PSP2 is supposedly heading for release in late 2011.
You can check out the pics after the jump, but be aware these have not been proven as authentic as of this time.
Literally. The new PSP2′s screen will be an inch larger and ‘sharper’ than the PSP.
Kotaku reports that: “The screen itself is not only sharper than the current PSP’s but also about an inch larger. The larger screen means that the PSP2 will be larger as well. In the private meetings, Sony is touting the screen as ‘HD’ “
These reports also back up information gathered about the existence of a touch screen panel on the back of the device saying: “The touch panel was described as looking like a big mouse track pad. When Sony showed the PSP2, it did not provide concrete details regarding how the trackpad will be implemented in games and instead is leaving that to the discretion of game developers.”
In saying this the product stands unfinished and spec is likely to change. Sources say that the PSP2 is likely to launch at the end of 2011 but this is just a rumour.

As if we did not need any more ammo to prove the existence of the PSP2 Sony has stated that they will stop distributing Dev Kits for the PSP in November. After there was a bit of a slip up at PAX when a representative for the Developers of the new Mortal Kombat blatantly stated that they had been looking at the hardware already.
The PSP has been doing poorly when compared to the mammoth that is the DS. I am not sure what Sony has in mind besides more horsepower under the hood, but I hope they address some of the issues with Piracy and the tendency for ports on their console.
The 3DS has been met with extremely positive reactions and views ever since it was unveiled last June and hardware leaks have shown off what it’s capable of. But Sony is still keeping very quiet about the PSP2 and is even yet to officially announce it.
The PSP has had trouble competing with the DS for years now. PSP games have traditionally not sold well and the PSP Go is now considered pretty much a failure due to such low sales. Whilst the DS has remained the top selling machine in most territories nearly every month.
More importantly, games that you would expect to see hit the PSP such as: Metal Gear Solid 3, 2 Resident Evil games, Saints Row, Splinter Cell, Ridge Racer, Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden have already been annouced or shown off for the 3DS. These are in addition to many other games meant for the younger audience that has traditionally controlled the market for the DS.
All the hype is over Nintendo and the 3DS whilst Sony quietly waits for an opportunity to steal the thunder. But the real question is, should they even bother? I mean by the looks of it the PSP will never overtake the DS so maybe Sony should give up trying.. Anyone disagree?
